For years you knew him as Mary Tyler Moore’s loveable boss Lou Grant. Now Ed Asner stars in ‘A Man and His Prostate,’ a comedy about a hilarious visit to the hospital in preparation for a surgery that he isn’t looking forward to. A true life experience adapted for stage by Emmy and Golden Globe award winning Ed Weinberger.
Tickets: $36, $46, $56
Asner calls “A Man and His Prostate” a male response to “The Vagina Monologues.” It’s actually the story of comedy writer Ed. (for Edwin) Weinberger, a nine-time Emmy Award-winner known for his work on “Taxi” and “The Cosby Show.” The play is based on Weinberger’s experiences after suffering an attack of prostatitis while on vacation in Italy.
It deals with some tender topics for men, but Asner said he also found it “delightfully funny.” At the same time, there is a message behind the laughter. Every 16 minutes, Asner said, a man dies of prostate cancer in this country.
Asner said neither the subject matter nor being in a one-man show bothers him. “Not when you get out there and you start generating laughs,” he said. “You appreciate the honor, and just try to maintain the pace.”
- An excerpt from Andy Smith's Article in the Providence Journal
Asner carries the show solo, but a series of pictures from a hospital add visual elements to the production as the play progresses. It is a thoroughly enjoyable piece of theater with a nice balance of both comedic and more serious elements. Asner is a master of comedy, and charms with his personality and distinct voice. While it is of serious health issue, A Man and His Prostate is highly entertaining while serving as a public service announcement for men to get prostate screening and check-ups.
